A fresh outlook on the Masai Mara
Thanks to a collaboration between Sanctuary Retreats and the Mara Triangle Conservancy, an international architecture competition was opened through the Royal Institute of British Architects. The competition invited registered architects to help design a tourism and conservation centre that will frame a fresh outlook on the Masai Mara.
When the doors open to the Masai Mara Conservation Centre, visitors will be able to climb up to an observation deck for wide-angle views over the savanna, spotting zebras among the acacia trees. Using interactive displays, they’ll learn about the incredible landscape, the wildlife that surrounds them, the importance of conservation, and the customs and culture of the semi-nomadic Masai people. The first of its kind in Kenya, this centre will form a striking architectural element for the reserve and give visitors a valuable orientation point — as well as promoting sustainable tourism and providing an educational space for schools and the local community.
The centre will be located next to Oloololo Gate, one of six gates to the Masai Mara National Reserve, set in the north-east of the reserve near the Mara River and a short distance from the rift valley known as the Oloololo escarpment. The Masai Mara is a destination very close to the heart of Sanctuary Retreats and its founder Geoffrey Kent. Sanctuary Retreats Philanthropy projects have been raising funds and awareness for conservation and community efforts in the Masai Mara ever since the first camp opened in Kenya's Masai Mara back in 1999.
The shortlist for the international competition has been announced, with the winning design being decided in November 2024. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) competition received over 100 entries from 32 different countries by the deadline date.
